Character Fame, Infamy and Achievements

Character Fame, Infamy and Achievements

Fame and Infamy
With the Reputation System the game has in place a way to provide a measurement of fame and infamy levels among the various groups/organizations found in the settings of the game.

Reputation can provide a bonus or penalty to social interactions with a group/organization the character has earned some reputation with. It also provides an at a glance idea for players on what to expect in certain social situations, in other words - it is a representation on how famous/infamous that character is.

0: Neutral
All characters start at neutral and must earn reputation as they get played.
This is also applied to returning player characters. As it is a reflection of the loss of rep due to character inactivity over time.

1 - 9: Just getting started.

10 - 18: The character is starting to get some notice. Their name may be familiar, or their description. People are likely to make a connection to character achievements and participation in major events.

19 - 25: The character is well known. People may start asking if the character will be showing up to certain events, character is quickly connected to achievements and major events they were at, and easily remembered by NPCs there.

The above also applies to negative rep gains, though the reaction would be in a negative manner, as that would be infamy.

A character’s reputation will appear every time they post.
Right above the dice roll area will be the word Reputation with a line. When Reputation is clicked on, a list of all groups and organizations a character has earned reputation with will appear.
One can then use this to determine how the NPCs or their own character may react to that particular character.

Achievements
In addition to reputation there are character achievements. These are earned from IC activity and awarded by A/SHs. There is no single way to earn an achievement, but some examples of achievements are titles earned ICly, championship participation and winnings, competitions, etc.

Achievements can be used along with a character’s Reputation to get an idea on how well known the character is and what for.

Hostility and Reputation

Hostility Levels

The hostility level of a court reflects the seriousness of the crime and how poorly received the character is. It accounts for repeat offenders and circumstances of the crime. The hostility level determines the difficulty for any rolls to reduce the punishment for the crime. A crime starts at a given hostility level, and the circumstances of the situation and character reputation may raise or lower the hostility. Evidence gathered against the character is considered to be included already by setting the tier for the hostility of the court.

Hostility Punishment Types Difficulty Statute of Limitations Notes
Tier 1 Fines, Service RP 25 1 year Minor stuff. Most simple violations (vandalism, disorderly conduct, etc.) This tier is basically the warning tier. On average would not expect punishments to go over 500s.
Tier 2 Fines, Service RP, Prison 50 2 years Aggravated crimes, minor theft, false accusations, manslaughter, kidnapping, etc.
Tier 3 Fines, Service RP, Prison, Permanent Marks 75 3 years Major thefts, murder of passion, assault, arson, etc.
Tier 4 Fines, Service RP, Prison, Permanent Marks, Stat Loss 100 No limit Planned murders, rape. The biggest stuff.
Tier 5 Fines, Service RP, Prison, Permanent Marks, Stat Loss, Death 125 No limit
No crime initially starts at tier 5. In order for the court to be this hostile the character must be a repeat offender.

How Does Reputation Apply?

Reputation with (or against) the local law enforcement agency applies to the hostility of the court. This allows for repeat offenders to face a more or less hostile court when they commit a crime. The local government will list the reputation group that applies for this system. If a character has a reputation over or under 16 / -16 with that group adjust the hostility levels up or down by one level. You cannot raise or lower a tier above 5 or below 1.

Note: The shift of tier is only by *one* level, this is not intended as a cumulative adjustment.

Reputation Hostility Effect
+16 or more -1 Tier
15 to -15 No change
-16 or less +1 Tier

Crime PP / Hostility Table

Use these crimes as guidelines for severity for the crimes the character is accused of. This is NOT an exhaustive list but is intended to give an idea of appropriate targets for the crimes listed. The exact detail of punishment may vary by area - some locations may favor silver punishments over time in jail, or penalize some crimes more or less harshly than average. That information will be in the government write up for the location. PP for any particular crime is maxed at 50 PP. Always round down for PP calculated as a percentage of a given value, minimum 1 PP.

Note: the PP targets for these crimes need to stay within 0 to 50 PP at most! Keep in mind the player only has 3 rolls to possibly reduce these values to zero - so they are NOT going to be able to grind down PP targets in the thousands. Punishments are scaled based on the tier of the crime - so a Tier 1 crime and a Tier 5 crime are punished differently even if they have the same amount of leftover PP.

Note: For theft, the value of 500 silver was selected based on the value of a starting character, it should be adjusted if the value of a starting character’s economy is changed in the future.

Crime Hostility Difficulty PP (Max 50) Notes
Disturbing the Peace Tier 1 25 10 PP Public drunkenness, fighting in public, minor vandalism, graffiti, etc.
Minor Theft Tier 2 50 1/10th the value of the item Items equal or below 500s, where no assault was committed
Selling Contraband Tier 2 50 1/100th the value of the item Selling contraband where illegal
Creating Contraband Tier 2 50 1/10th the value of the item Creating contraband where illegal
Arson Tier 2 50 1/10th the value of item or 5 PP per occupancy of the building Destruction of property by fire. Calculate occupancy based on how many people could be housed in the building permanently
Bribery Tier 2 50 10 PP Bribing a public official - usually in context of getting off for other crimes
False Accusations Tier 2 50 10 PP False accusations aimed at NPCs or PCs that go to trial
Stalking or Peeping Tier 2 50 10 PP If PC on PC: The player must have been given explicit positive consent from the other player or the player will be up for a Social Strike not IC punishment.
Kidnapping Tier 2 50 25 PP Unlawfully detaining an individual
Manslaughter Tier 2 50 50 PP Murder by accident or negligence
Smuggling contraband Tier 3 75 1/10th the value of the item Moving contraband into an area where illegal
Major theft Tier 3 75 1/10th the value of the item Items above 500s where no assault was committed
Major Assault Tier 3 75 10 PP Extreme attacks, torture, attempted (and failed) murder
Sexual Assault Tier 3 75 10 PP If PC on PC: The player must have been given explicit positive consent from the other player or the player will be up for a Social Strike not IC punishment.
Mass Assault Tier 3 75 25 PP Also covers piracy and banditry
Mass Kidnapping Tier 3 75 50 PP Of a group, includes running a slave ring where slavery is outlawed
Murder of Passion Tier 3 75 50 PP Angry murders are not planned, 2nd degree
Rape Tier 4 100 10 PP If PC on PC: The player must have been given explicit positive consent from the other player or the player will be up for a Social Strike not IC punishment.
Planned Murder Tier 4 100 25 PP 1st degree, with forethought and planning
Mass Murder Tier 4 100 50 PP Lots of people all at once
Serial Murder Tier 4 100 50 PP Lots of people over time
Treason or Spying N/A N/A N/A This type of crime is better run as part of a larger saga

Which Types of Reputation Apply?

That will normally be listed with the legal authority / government doing the sentencing so this should never be a question that need to be answered.

But as a general guideline for situations where the government is not yet clearly defined see the chart below for reputation scores that will add positive or negative modifiers for a character on trial in a given region. SHs should apply discretion in only applying reputations that are applicable to the given location (so a positive reputation with a distant church might not help with a particular theocratic court).

Examples of types of government and for/against group reputations that may apply:

Types of Government Good Reputations Bad Reputations
ALL TYPES Related Legal Groups Criminal Organizations
Democracy or Representative Republic Populace Terrorist groups, Enemy governments
Oligarchy or Aristocracy Nobility, Merchants Populace
Theocracy Church, Populace Rival Church, Populace
Monarchy Nobility, Royal family Rival families, Populace
Dictatorship or Totalitarian Merchants, Political party Populace, Enemy parties
Military Dictatorship Military Populace, Nobility
Anarchy Populace Nobility
No government Populace, Warlord group Enemy warlord group

Any additional non-rep biases (race, color, etc) should be played as part of a given NPC in a more complicated session situation, not as part of the justice system.

Ramsalon Druid Circle

The druid circle of the Ramsalon region on the Vaxian Continent

  • Status of Organization: Active
  • Active Membership: - 13
  • Where Based and Areas of Influence: Ramsalon Forest Ramsalon Mountains
  • Leadership: Animus the Archdruid
  • Legal Status: They are in good legal standing with their neighbors.
  • Distinguishing Marks: None readily visible; the Circle knows its own and is rather closed off to outsiders
  • Known Enemies: The Blaze; Mizrahim
  • Known Allies: Ramsalon Wood Clan , Elven Alliance , Ramsalon Forest Lurai and Aratay

The Ramsalon Druid Circle are a group of Druids who preserve and protect the Ramsalon Forest and Mountains. The Arch Druid Animus leads the Circle. The other Circle members are considered High Druids. Druids of the forest who are not actively a member of the Circle are considered Forest Guardians, a role not necessarily limited to those who would call themselves druids but instead open to any interested party dedicated to the protection and preservation of the forest and its inhabitants.

    Currently Known High Druids:

    • Founding origin: Historical texts point to the accidental discovery of a strangely runed obelisk, set in an utterly peaceful clearing in what is now known as the Ramsalon Forest. The person who stumbled upon it later admitted to feeling a strange calling, whereby they spent time among the woods and becoming attuned to the nature around them. Thus, the first of the Ramsalon druids came about. Many others, over the millenia, have similarly felt pulled toward the Obelisk, either already having, or attaining, some significant natural affinity, whether it is nature magic, shapeshifting, or command of the regional elements. Those who are granted access to the Obelisk, though surprisingly not recorded, seem to enjoy an extended lifespan in exchange for their service to protect the Forest against those who would cut or burn it.

    • Organization structure: One Arch Druid, with twelve High Druids spanning the region's forest and mountains, above and below ground. Each Druid takes responsibility for a particular aspect, such as the animals or plants, within their area. There are also those called Forest Guardians, whom are not full fledged members, but have shown promise and potential to possibly rise to the ranks should there be a need. They often work with the circle should the situation arise.

    • Current projects / Interests: The Circle is currently concerned with gradually and naturally healing what parts of the forest the Blaze had managed to affect in his campaign against the Wood Clan. There are also efforts to rehabilitate the Elrune that were rescued from Mizrahim, ensuring they return to their natural order without upsetting the overall balance. As such, they may be hard to contact or find, and accordingly, they may be a little more protective and guarded than before.

    • Membership related information:
      • How to join: With their generally long life-spans, the Druid Circle is currently not seeking new full members; should the time come, one whose respect for and prowess within the ecosystem of the Ramsalon Forest and Mountains may be pulled toward the Obelisk, where they will face several trials and tests before being accepted into the Circle as a full partner. On the other hand, Forest Guardians may be chosen from among those whose actions, skills, and interests align with the Circle's own.

      • Any benefits of membership: Relative ease of passage throughout the forest and mountains; access or ability to see paths, trails, and areas otherwise unfound by those not welcome by the forest.

      • How to maintain membership and obligations: Actively care for the forest - its trees, plants, and animals; protect them from invasion and destruction; act responsibly when within the forest and mountains.

      • How to leave (if you can): Moving away from the Ramsalon peninsula; forming a mutual disagreement with the views or interests of the Circle, so long as it doesn't come in direct conflict with them. One will lose access to their benefits, but may be remembered kindly to where forest and mountain travel will not be made more difficult.

      • How to get kicked out and any punishments incurred: Aiding and abetting known enemies of the Circle; needless and/or malicious harm to animals, plants, and trees; attacking any of the thirteen. Any of these will get your status as either a member of the Circle or a Forest Guardian completely and permanently revoked. Retaliation may be swift, depending on the severity, but one can expect to feel a sense of unease and being watched whenever among the Circle's areas of influence.
