Rumors and Riddles

Rumors and Riddles was founded in 2961 (52 years ago) by a tanner named Farrah Barten. She created Rumors and Riddles as a flyer of. . . well, rumors and riddles. . . that also included an advertisement for her tannery. This successfully boosted her business so much that she was able to hire on workers to run the tannery so that she could focus full time on Rumors and Riddles which slowly grew to include event listings and news. A business model built on printed advertisements was formed and the paper eventually found its focus on journalism and informed editorials with the help of stand out reporters like Lucy Talebearer (who went on to become the editor before eventually taking an indefinite hiatus).

Rumors and Riddles’ current editor is Landon Goffe Much of the day to day running of the paper is actually handled by the business manager, Kelsie Bareford

Recent events have buoyed the paper. The shutdown of Ramsalon Rise is clearly seen as a positive development and the lighter hand of the Shinkan government is a welcome change from the Iron Empire’s practices in the recent past. A normalcy has fallen upon the city and people are once again supplementing their hours with reading and shopping. Readership is rising, as is advertiser interest.

Before the Darkest Night the paper was headquartered in Haven Croft but the warping of the land there required the paper to move. Currently, Rumors and Riddles is based out of a sprawling two-story building in the southern reaches of the Common Flats District It faces a large courtyard lined with two-story shop buildings and a few large trees. The courtyard itself is connected to one of the main north-south roads that cut through the district. From the outside, the building appears almost like a huge home, if not for a few details. There’s a veritable field of cobblestone in front of the building to allow the parking and maneuvering of numerous wagons. There are large barn doors on the bottom floor which open into the giant room containing the R&R printing presses. On the second floor is the meeting room and offices where the contents of the paper are discussed and written.

Ramsalon
In Ramsalon there are four main newspapers:

  • The Rumors and Riddles is the oldest, most respected, and most widely-read paper in Ramsalon, dating from before the Darkest Night For a time it was edited by Lucy Talebearer, though the title of Editor is now in the hands of Landon Goffe Rumors and Riddles is mostly serious journalism and editorials.
  • The Vaxian Sun is a tabloid rag most popular among the people of Beth Bow full of sensationalist celebrity gossip, horoscopes, the occasional softcore nudie print, and very little actual news.
  • The White Rose University Bulletin, edited by one Dr. Maurice Oldstone, is the academic journal of Ramsalon, full of research about archaeology, science, and magic. In other words, it's a paper for nerds.
  • The official government publication was called Ramsalon Rise, and was almost entirely propaganda. After the Naga Nori War this paper shut down.
With the exception of Ramsalon Rise, the Newspapers have always been and continue to remain genuinely free. (Though the government surreptitiously funded the Vaxian Sun, on the hypothesis that if the people are occupied with gossip, they won't get worked up about anything else.)
